Gita my hope

Shree A.K.Bhargva narrated the empowerment of Gita like this :- Why I read the Gita. After going through the Gita several times, I thought I have now a good balanced mind and nothing can upset me.

But I proved myself wrong when a telephone call from India threw my mind in a tizzy. Since than I knew that I must not only read Gita but assimilate it in life so that I am ready for any eventuality.

During a trip to the US to spend some time with my children and participate in the study group of Chinmay Mission, another experience awaited me. I thought I was perfectly healthy when I left for US. A fortnight before leaving for India. All my energy was drained and it became difficult to even walk a few feet. The sugar in blood went up above 400. I lost more than 16 kg within a few days. there was no appetite and no food intake. I was hospitalised, and tests showed that I was suffering from a rare type of incurable cancer.

I was also told that considering my weak condition they won't recommend any treatment like chemotherapy. They gave me only four weeks to live and asked me to reconcile to that. This was the nearest. I came face to face with death.

I went through it all calmly, and I found I was a gainer. If I die I am sure He would take me in his shelter. If He gives me a little more time, I can fulfill some of my remaining desires of attending more Gita lectures and camps at Rishikesh.

Since then eight weeks have passed; and I responded well to chemotherapy at another hospital. The swelling is gone, and I can walk around. I now know why I read Gita. "Fix your mind on Me alone, place your intellect in Me, you shall then no doubt live in Me alone hence-forth. I promise you shall come to Me alone because you are dear to Me".

Conversation with God on success

CHETAN BHAGAT had doubts whether he should use his (and his characters') conversation with God in his book - One Night @t the Call Center. The reason: His readers may or may not take it favourably, Anywhy, he used it (all about success in life), and this is how I look at it.

Goof tells him that there are four ways to be successful in life. Take first the first two obvious ones: a) a little bit of intelligence and b) a bit of imagination.

And than the God goes to narrate the third and the fourth. The third, God says, is what one of the characters had lost: self-confidence. God says that the character has gone down so much in his confidence and self-esteem that he believes he has become a good-for-nothing fellow.

God gives him the reason as well: a bad boss. A bad boss, God says, can be "like a disease of the soul, and if you get convinced something is wrong with you".

And the character asks God how to get his lost confidence back so that he could lead a normal life. God says "Don't be scared and you will get it back. And then there won't be any stooping you.

Asked for the fourth and the last ingredient for success , God says, The fourth ingredient is the most painful one. And it is "Something all of you still need to learn. Because it is often the most important thing". It is , God says, failure. "To be really successful, you face failure, You have to experience it, feel it, taste it and suffer it. Only then can you shine."

Before any of the characters responded, God adds quickly" For, Once you taste failure, you have no fear. You can take risks more easily. Than you don't want to struggle in your comfort zone any more - you are ready to fly. And success is all about flying , not snuggling".

Dear Chetan, I don't take your God business, but must tell you that was the only part of the book I enjoyed reading . thanks.

Qualify to deserve what you desire

A teacher once told her students that she had not failed anyone. A wave of cheer went round the class. She added that she had not passed anyone either, it was the students themselves who had done it.

" You are what your deep driving desire is. As is your will, so are your deeds. As are your deeds, so is your destiny."

In the case of the students, their desires were not backed up with enough will and hard work. So , how could they expect the teacher do what they didn't deserve?

It is the sum total of our desires or vasnas that matters, since our karma's are largely dominated by our vasna. This desire, however, should be so strong that other secondary desires lose their charm. If we have hundreds of small vasnas, we achieve nothing. But if we have one strong vasna, we get what we desire. Moreover,we qualify to deserve what we desire.

To deserve something it is necessary to set goals and work towards them without losing focus. You cannot sail in many boats at the same time. Our needs or desires can be classified into four categories. The first type is met without much effort - food and shelter.

There are some that we get with a bit of effort like education, a clean house, etc. For some, we have to put in a lot of effort - doing well professionally. The fourth category includes those desires that can never be fulfilled - our wish to get respect from everyone.

Most of our desires fall in the first and second categories. it is the third category that takes one onto the path of progress and spirituality.

Reason out your scary thought

Fear and worry are cancerous. And both are associated with those who do not go for a reasoned-out way of life, and are perpetually negative in approach.

True, to some extent, each one of us exhibits fear, worry and anxiety because they are natural instincts of self-preservation and being cautious. It is prolonged fear and worry that throw our body and mind system out of gear.

The Buddha had said that fear arise in the fool, and not in the wise man. What he wanted to say was that fear is a state of mind, and one who understands and realises it has no reason to be scared of anything, It is one's negative attitude and inability to fathom into the complexity of a problem that gives way to fear. In other words, fear is one's own creation, and can be best kept out of one's bounds if one reasons it out.

Here, I am reminded of a beautiful saying of a sage on reply to a question as to how fear can be tackled out. The sage's words of wisdom were somewhat like these:" Try to do something good for someone you love, or the needy." On still getting a blank expression, the sage went on to explain, "None can harbour two opposing sets of thought of helping someone sincerely, one's mind erase out the fearful thoughts.

One does not want to say that fear and worry are always the products of one's mind. Yes, there are external factors too that precipitate one's apprehensions into fear. And a person who cannot face such situation gets into a negative realm of thoughts, and that may turn into a killer. The rising number of suicides these days are example of such turn of events.

Therefore, the mantra is Scare away your fear and worry, and be happy and hopeful, always. Great hopes make a great man. And , as someone said, he who has hopes can have anything. Cheers.
